L'Empire, C'est Moi!

In a moment of striking candour, something for which the EU and the EuroNabobery are not noted, José Manuel Barroso, President of the European Commission gave a startling but accurate description of how the EU views itself:

“We are not the United States of Europe — we are unique in the history of mankind! Sometimes I like to compare the EU as a creation to the organisation of empires. We have the dimension of empire but there is a difference. Empires were made with force with a centre imposing diktat."
“Now what we have is the first non-imperial empire. We have 27 countries that fully decided to work together and to pool their sovereignty. I believe it is a great construction and we should be proud of it.”
There has since been some backpedaling, but the central point is clear: the EU's Chief unelected bureaucrat thinks he is on the point of being declared an Emperor of all he surveys.

This is, perhaps, not a new Rome, a new Constantinople or a new Holy Roman Empire, but the new Amending Treaty is a Constitution and these remarks clearly reveal that that is how the EU views matters and that it is preparing to assume all the powers of a nation state in its own right.

What clearer, blunter evidence could we have of the need for a referendum?

And lest anyone mistake our determination never to be enslaved, if an Empire is what they think they have achieved, then, we swear, we will tear it down, brick by brick, law by law, piece by piece, until it is no more.
